Hanky Panky: Are you having some hanky panky? Valentine’s Day must be around the corner!
Don’t be fooled by the Sex on a Beach-esque name; the Hanky Panky is a classic cocktail from the early 1900s, invented by one of the mothers of the cocktail movement, Ada Coleman.
Coleman was the head bartender of the American Bar in Savoy through the mid-1920s. When Sir Charles Hawtrey — mentor to cocktail-great Noel Coward — tried Coleman’s drink, he exclaimed, “By Jove! That is the real hanky panky.” And so the Hanky Panky earned it’s unfortunate name.
You’ll notice from the recipe that this drink resembles a Negroni. But instead of Campari, it has the infamous Italian Amaro Fernet Branca, a few drops of which go a long way.
This Valentine’s Day, show some love to Ada Coleman.
1 1/2 ounces gin
1 1/2 ounces sweet vermouth
1/4 ounce Fernet Branca
Shake or stir the ingredients, depending on how diluted you want it to be. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

Check out this Smirnoff Gold recipe based on the classic French “Golden 75”. The recipe consists of Smirnoff Gold collectors edition, Dom Benedictine, sugar syrup and sparkling white wine. Garnished with the zest of a fresh flamed orange. Served up in a champagne flute glass.
