Last night I had dinner at a place that rightfully boasted about great craft beer and cocktails made with true mixology care and thought.
I had an amazing old fashioned that started with bitters muddled with cubed sugar and finished with a real…
Fresh Cherry Sidecar
1 1/2 oz cherry brandy
1/2 oz cherry syrup
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
Click the picture for directions to make the cherry brandy and cherry syrup; it takes some time, but it’s definitely worth the wait. Rim the glass with lime juice and dip in sugar. Shake with ice and strain into a chilled martini glass.

Old Michaelmas
5 blackberries
5 mint leaves
2 slices of cucumber
3/4 oz simple syrup
3/4 oz fresh lime juice
2 oz gin
Club soda
Mint garnish
Muddle the blackberries, mint, cucumber, and syrup in a tumbler. Fill the glass with ice to keep the crushed fruit at the bottom before adding the lime juice and gin. Add club soda to the top and garnish with mint.
It’s summer, so make good use of the cheap, fresh produce. As legend goes, the devil cursed on blackberries on Old Michaelmas Day (October 11) when he was banished from heaven and now urinates on them on that day every year. So get your brambles while their fresh!
